THEATER OF THE OPPRESSED
We are a community-funded theater troupe of refugees in Kuala Lumpur which aims to raise awareness on social, economic and mental health issues faced by refugees. We aim to rebuild confidence of our members through theater acting and aid in relieving depression.
Theater of the Oppressed is neither theatre as entertainment, nor theatre for propaganda. The audience is not a passive observer but an active participant. This sparks reflection towards societal issues and strengthens participants’ role in civic society.
Using dialogue, the audience nurtures a non-violent approach and culture. As human beings, we often get trapped or frozen in patterns of behaviour that impede real communication. Theater of the Oppressed gives us tools that help us ‘unfreeze’, break some of these patterns, and become aware of our full potential for dialoguing with our fellow human beings.
